IntelliSee + Axis Communications: AI Detection on Existing Cameras

Axis cameras already capture everything. IntelliSee makes that footage intelligent — detecting weapons, falls, unauthorized access, and 8+ other threats in real time without replacing a single camera. See how AI compares to traditional CCTV.

The Architecture

Intelligence at the Edge, Not in the Camera

Axis cameras are engineered for image quality, durability, and network reliability — not for running complex AI inference workloads. IntelliSee was designed with that boundary in mind. Rather than requiring on-camera processing via Axis ACAP or proprietary SDKs, IntelliSee connects to Axis cameras at the stream level via ONVIF or RTSP and runs all detection on a dedicated edge appliance.

The result: your Axis cameras perform exactly as Axis designed them. IntelliSee handles the AI. Every frame is analyzed in real time for 11+ threat categories without touching camera firmware, degrading video quality, or voiding hardware warranties. Learn exactly how the detection pipeline works.

Supported Axis Hardware

Any Axis camera with ONVIF Profile S or RTSP is supported. IntelliSee connects at the stream level — no firmware changes, no ACAP installation, no hardware modifications required.

How It Works

From Axis Camera to AI Alert in Three Steps

IntelliSee connects to your Axis deployment through the same protocols your VMS already uses. Setup requires no firmware changes, no camera reconfiguration, and no interruption to existing recording.

01

1. Connect

The IntelliSee appliance receives RTSP or ONVIF streams from your Axis cameras over your existing network. No new cabling. No camera reconfiguration. Connection takes minutes per camera.

02

2. Detect

IntelliSee’s AI detection platform analyzes every frame from every Axis camera in real time — simultaneously identifying weapons, falls, unauthorized access, loitering, crowd anomalies, and more.

03

3. Alert

Confirmed threats trigger immediate alerts through your notification infrastructure — SMS, email, RapidSOS to 911, AtlasIED lockdown, or Singlewire mass notification.

Detection Capabilities

Every Axis Camera Becomes a Multi-Threat Sensor

IntelliSee runs 11+ detection models simultaneously on each connected camera feed. A single Axis camera watching a school entrance can detect a weapon, an unauthorized visitor, and an after-hours intrusion — all at once, all in real time. See how threats are prioritized in the AI Security Risk Matrix.

Weapon Detection

Firearms and edged weapons identified within seconds of appearing on any connected Axis camera — indoors or outdoors, day or night.

Unauthorized Access

After-hours entry, tailgating through secured doors, and restricted-area breaches flagged the moment they occur.

Fall Detection

Individuals who fall and cannot self-recover identified immediately — critical for senior living, healthcare, and lone-worker environments.

Loitering Detection

Individuals lingering in restricted zones, building perimeters, or parking areas beyond defined time thresholds trigger automatic review.

Slip Risk Detection

Wet floors, spills, and environmental hazards detected before they cause injuries and liability claims.

Vehicle Detection

Wrong-way vehicles, lot intrusions, and restricted-zone access monitored across every outdoor Axis camera.

Detection Mapping

Each Axis Camera Becomes Part of a Multi-Threat Detection Grid

IntelliSee does not require Axis cameras to run custom firmware or camera-side analytics. The appliance analyzes the video streams centrally, then maps each detection event back to the camera, zone, and response workflow.

Axis camera areas mapped to IntelliSee detection coverage and operational use.
Camera Area Detection Coverage Operational Use
Entrances Weapons, loitering, unauthorized access Early threat identification at access points
Corridors Falls, weapons, crowd anomalies Life-safety awareness between staff rounds
Parking Areas Vehicles, loitering, perimeter events Exterior monitoring without guard patrol dependency
Restricted Zones Unauthorized access and dwell-time alerts Security response before escalation
Mechanical or Rooftop Areas Rooftop intrusion and perimeter control Protection for low-traffic critical spaces

Architecture Note

No ACAP. No Firmware Changes. No Vendor Lock-In.

Some AI detection platforms require installation of proprietary software directly on Axis cameras via the Axis Camera Application Platform (ACAP). IntelliSee takes a different approach: all AI processing runs on a local edge appliance, not on the camera itself. This means IntelliSee works on Axis cameras regardless of model age, firmware version, or ACAP support status. It also means your Axis cameras remain under standard Axis warranty and support conditions — no modifications, no restrictions.

The same architecture works across every other ONVIF-compatible camera manufacturer. If you add non-Axis cameras in the future, IntelliSee detects on those feeds automatically. Use the AI Camera Cost Comparison tool to see how adding intelligence to existing hardware stacks up against buying new smart cameras.

FAQ

Axis Compatibility Questions

Does IntelliSee work with Axis cameras?

Yes. IntelliSee connects to Axis IP cameras via ONVIF or RTSP — the same open protocols Axis cameras support natively. No camera replacement, no firmware changes, and no proprietary SDK is required. Your existing Axis infrastructure becomes the sensor network for AI-powered threat detection.

Which Axis camera models are compatible?

IntelliSee is compatible with Axis fixed cameras, PTZ cameras, multisensor cameras, and panoramic cameras that support ONVIF Profile S or RTSP video streams. This covers the vast majority of Axis cameras manufactured in the past decade — P-series, Q-series, M-series, and beyond. If your Axis camera streams video over a network, IntelliSee can connect to it.

Does IntelliSee require Axis ACAP or on-camera analytics?

No. IntelliSee does not use Axis ACAP applications or rely on on-camera processing. All detection runs on IntelliSee’s dedicated edge appliance, which receives and analyzes video streams from Axis cameras at the network level. This approach provides consistent detection performance independent of camera processor capability.

Can IntelliSee run alongside Axis Camera Station?

Yes. IntelliSee connects to Axis cameras at the stream level and does not replace your VMS. Axis Camera Station, AXIS Companion, or any third-party VMS continues operating independently. IntelliSee adds an AI detection layer that runs in parallel — your existing recording and playback workflows are unaffected. See how IntelliSee compares in the AI security platform comparison.

What detection types are available on Axis cameras?

All IntelliSee detection types are available: weapon detection, fall detection, unauthorized access, loitering, crowd anomalies, slip hazards, vehicle detection, smoke and fire, cell phone detection, and more. Detection capabilities are identical regardless of camera manufacturer.
